Former deputy commerce and transport minister Thawee Kraikupt died on Friday night at Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok. He was 85 years old.

Thawee was in hospital since April 10 after suffering a head injury in a fall in his house in Ratchaburi province.

His funeral rites will be held at the family residence in Ratchaburi’s Photharam district, the Kraikupt family said on Friday.

A seven-time member of the House of Representatives for Ratchaburi province, Thawee entered politics as a member of the Bangkok Metropolitan Council in 1975. Four years later he ran as an MP candidate in Ratchaburi and emerged victorious. He later won the hearts of Ratchaburi locals for six more terms until 1996.

He was appointed the deputy commerce minister in 1981 of the Prem Tinsulanonda government and the deputy transport minister in 1992 during the Chuan Leekpai government.

Thawee was the father of Pareena Kraikupt, a former MP of Palang Pracharath Party.
