I am distressed to learn that The Nation, a trusted source of news and commentary on politics in Thailand for me since 2004, may have plans to dismiss one of its most compelling commentators, the cartoonist “Stephff”.

I have been reading The Nation, along with other local English-language news, since I arrived in Thailand eight years ago. I am saddened at the decision to stop printing the paper at the end of this week. As a journalist myself, I couldn’t feel worse about the state my profession is in right now.

For all these years I’ve been living here in Thailand, The Nation has been a very important news source for me and the same goes for the work of your editorial cartoonist Stephff.

I am horrified that your move to go online will see the loss of Stephff’s daily cartoons.

I understand the outpouring of love among letter writers for your cartoonist, Stephff, although I think some of it has been a little over the top.

Please don’t extinguish free expression by saying “NO FOREIGNERS” at the paper.

I am worried at rumours that The Nation is releasing its farang staff, in particular Stephff. 

I join my voice to the chorus imploring that you keep Stephff’s cartoons as part of your package.

I heard a whisper that, after a couple of decades Stephff’s iconic cartoons are to be cut from The Nation. Is the paper doing so badly that it must abandon one of the very few things which define it and give it character? The things which generate and nurture its reader base?

Open letter to the owners of The Nation

Stephff’s hatred for Donald Trump is so intense that even peace in the world is unacceptable to The Nation’s cartoonist.

I am writing to you regarding the editorial titled “This is not the time for Erdogan” (The Nation, October 25) and the cartoon published as Stephff’s View below.

Re:  “You are a delusional farang in Thailand if you need to keep telling everyone that your girlfriend is not an ex-bargirl”, Editorial cartoon, September 15-16.

I have been a political cartoonist for a national newspaper for 20 years now. On Thursday evening I received a notice from Facebook that I had violated its rules by publishing on my Facebook page “Stephff Tribal Art” the cartoon below, thus it was suppressed and I was asked to comply with “Facebook rules”, or else.

If the Iranian Embassy has a problem with Stephff’s cartoons, I suggest it address any complaints to this column instead of phoning him at his home. 

Re: “Stephff not big on Mid-East coffee”, Have Your Say, August 10.

On Thursday afternoon, a diplomat from the Iranian Embassy called me at my home asking if we could meet. If any country is not happy with one of my cartoons, I urge its embassy not to harass me at home but to file a complaint directly with this newspaper. 

Apropos cartoonist Stephff’s regular feature headed “You’ve been in Thailand too long if ...”, may I suggest a variation.
