Southeast Asia’s telecom and IT ministers and Japan have agreed to set up in Thailand an Asean centre for enhancing cybersecurity expertise among IT personnel, Digital Economy and Society Minister Pichet Durongkaveroj said this week.

He said the ministers and Japan’s representatives made the decision at the recent Asean Telecommunications and IT Ministers Meeting in Cambodia.

More than 150 officials a year in the state sector would undergo training at the centre, Pichet said.

The Japanese government would provide US$5 million for four years of operation, he said.

The centre will upgrade skills in dealing with cyberthreats, including incident response, malware analysis and digital forensics.
