Activists commemorate 28-month anniversary of copper mine crackdown

The 10 protesters from the Democratic Force demanded an end to the Letpadaungtaung copper-mine project and an investigation into the use of fire bombs against protesters more than two years ago. It was followed a deadly protest on December 22, 2014.

While staging a protest starting near Theingyizay Market, the Pabadan Police Force warned the protesters that their protest was against the law since they did not apply for permission. The police urged the protesters to disperse quickly.
Instead of dispersing, the protesters continued to Sule Pagoda, where the Kyaukdata Police Force gave them another warning.
The protestors held placards saying: “Get Out, Wanbao”, “Take actions against the culprits of the fire bombing”, “ Release political prisoners”, “ Grant a general amnesty” and “ No government violence” .
“On December 22, 2012, more than 30 monks and 10 people in the Letpadaungtaung protest camp were attacked with fire bombs. That’s why the incumbent government is not a civilian one, and they are only dictators. Crackdowns on workers and students are the legacy of this government. We demand the release of students and political prisoners who were arrested by this dictator government,” said Soe Zaw from the Democratic Force.
