ANP urges protection to conflict victims

The Central Executive Committee of the Arakan National Party (ANP) has urged the government to grant legal protection to innocent people detained on suspicion of involvement in recent armed clashes between the Myanmar Army and the Arakan Army (AA).

In a statement, it said there have been armed clashes between the government army and the AA in Kyauktaw, Rakhine State, as of March 29. Many local people have been displaced by the ongoing fighting.

“We are very concerned to hear that victims are facing difficulties,” the statement said.

“Our party will coordinate with officials from the Rakhine State government for the convenience of aid groups. But we call on the government to help support the accommodations, health, security and economy of the displaced as soon as possible.”.

“We would like to urge local authorities to protect the victims in accordance with the law, as we have heard news that innocent people are being arrested and tortured under suspicion of involvement with the AA.”

“All parties are urged to seek a political solution to the problem at the negotiation table as quickly as possible with the inclusion of all political parties in the local peacemaking process for the full realisation of democratic reforms and for reaching the nationwide ceasefire deal.”

The government army released a statement saying there were armed clashes between the government army and the Rakhine armed group near Kyauktaw Township in Rakhine State and Paletwa Township in Chin state. The army has captured some soldiers and arms.
