Tender to open for Myanmar-Korea Friendship Bridge

Tender to open for Myanmar-Korea Friendship Bridge

A tender will be opened for the creation of a Myanmar-Korea Friendship Bridge, which will connect downtown Yangon to Dala Township, according to Kyaw Lin, the permanent secretary of Construction Ministry.

The tender will have two stages: design and construction.

“First, we will open an international tender for design. Then we will open another tender for construction, which will follow the design,” said Kyaw Lin.

He added that the terms of the tender are being drafted now.

The Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund has promised over US$137 million in loans for the construction of the bridge.

The Construction Ministry announced that it will seek to solve the water shortage problem in Dala, which the residents of Dala face every dry season.

The project has been in the pipeline since President Thein Sein visited South Korea in 2012.

The 6,144-foot long suspension bridge is expected to cost $168.1 million in total.

Construction will start this year and is expected to be completed in 2020.
