Polling officers confused by Election Commission's instructions

Polling officers confused by Election Commission's instructions

THE ZEYATHIRI election sub-commission office in Nay Pyi Taw is confused about whether advance voters should be using pens or seals to mark their ballot papers, said Tin Mya, the office chairperson.

“The UEC [Union Election Commission] announced in stateowned newspapers that voters could tick their advance ballots with a ballpoint pen. Now another instruction said the voters should use a seal. The advance votes cast on October 29 will be kept but a list of other advance voters will have to be made. We asked the UEC about it. If boxes of advance votes need to be changed, we will have to inform the parties, journalists and witnesses. We will use two new boxes for advance votes,” Tin Mya said. “The UEC did not give any instructions to us. Only if the UEC instructs us can we go ahead. All the advance-voting booths are the same in Nay Pyi Taw. No seal was available [on Sunday]. There were 23 advance votes in total. The advance voters today used a seal.”
In Pyinmana, there were 61 advance voters, who had to be elsewhere on November 8.
“As far as I know, the advance votes must be ticked. A tick must be on the ballot paper. The voting officers should be informed in advance. Which one will be used, a tick or seal? The 23 advance votes cannot be ruled illegitimate,” said Phyoe Zeya Thaw, the NLD’s Lower House candidate.
