Malaysian shot dead while on the way to Hat Yai airport

A Malaysian businessman was shot dead near Ban Khlong Pom in Kanchanawanit along the Sadao-Hatyai Road in southern Thailand, about 45km from the Malaysian-Thai border.

The incident occurred at about noon (1pm Malaysian time) yesterday when Lee Ah Han (pic), 54, was driving his Thai-registered car to the Hat Yai airport, some 20km away.

Two gunmen in a car fired a number of shots, believed to be from a M-16 rifle, and killed him in the driver’s seat.

It is learnt that a woman who was seated beside him was injured in the incident and was rushed to the Prince of Songkhla University’s Hospital in Hat Yai.

Lee, who sustained gunshot wounds to his head, was originally from here but had migrated to Bangkok with his wife, in her 40s, and their two daughters, in their 20s, several years ago.

The shooting left about 10 bullet holes on the driver’s side window and several holes on the front windscreen.

Lee, who was also known as Ali Baba, was said to be involved in the property development business in southern Thailand and Bangkok.

A relative, who declined to be named, said he believed that the motive of the shooting was due to business disputes.

He added that Lee’s body, which was sent to Prince of Songkhla University’s Hospital, would be taken back to Bangkok by his family members.
