Koh Tao protests continue on December 30

Koh Tao protests continue on December 30

Protests continue in Yangon and Mandalay and in border towns on December 30 against the death sentence given to two migrant workers in Thailand.

A protest took place in Yangon’s Bo Sein Man playground on that day against the sentencing. Around 100 protesters took part in the rally demanding the release of Zaw Lin and Win Zaw Tun, the pair sentenced to death in Thailand.

“We want to show that we will never be silent over injustice. This is a human rights campaign. We’re not from any organisation. We’re youths who united for the protest,” said demonstrator Htet Aung.

The protests have entered a fifth day with another letter being drafted for the Thai embassy.

A third protest took place in Mandalay on December 30 to demand the truth about the Koh Tao murder case. Political activists and residents, including a lawyer, took part in the Mandalay protest which obtained official permission in advance.

The Mandalay protesters demanded the “true culprits” be found.

In the city, the Upper Myanmar Saffron Network silently protested by walking along Oo Pwar Pagoda Road with placards saying: “We ask for justice”, “Free them” and “Justice now”.

Around 500 protesters took to the streets in Taunggyi, walking around the town calling for the release of the two migrants.

Ethnic minorities from around Taunggyi also took part in the protest.

About 900 people also took part in a fourth protest in Kawthaung, a border town with Thailand.

In Payathonzu about 300 young people staged a protest near the border demanding justice.

“I feel the death sentence is unfair. That’s why I took part in the protest. We want the true culprits to be found. We also organised prayer protests at night,” said a young protester.

Around 5,000 migrant workers from across Myanmar live in Payathonzu, working in Thai factories in the morning and returning across the border at around 5pm after work. They said they feared facing discrimination for taking part in the protests.
