VN military to clean up mass fish deaths

Hanoi - ABOUT 540 Vietnamese soldiers have been mobilised to remove tonnes of dead fish from Hanoi’s largest lake after an unprecedented mass death, authorities said yesterday.

“At the end of Monday, there were 76 tonnes of dead fish |that had been collected,” said Nguyen Xuan Dung of the National Committee for |Search and Rescue, which was coordinating the investigation.
Dead fish began appearing late on Saturday night in Hanoi’s Ho Tay lake, which is situated south of one of Hanoi’s most affluent neighbourhoods, and by Sunday afternoon the lake’s banks were lined with floating fish carcasses.

“Oxygen depletion”
Local authorities blamed the deaths on oxygen depletion, adding that 20 aeration devices had now been installed to save the remaining fish, the Vietnam Net news site reported.
Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has personally called for city authorities to immediately |coordinate lake inspections |to determine the cause of the deaths.
Dang Huy Huynh, vice-president of the Vietnam Association of Conservation of Nature and Environment, told the Tuoi Tre newspaper that this was first time a mass death in the lake had been reported.
