Malaysian couple creates magic in China

Petaling Jaya - A Malaysian husband-and-wife team of magicians is in the Guinness World Records for a record-breaking “quick change” act.

Avery Chin and Sylvia Lim’s Sept 28 feat during a show at the Happy Valley theme park in Wuhan, China, saw them complete 18 changes of costume in one minute.
They bettered the previous record by two outfits and are now holders of the “most costume change illusions in one minute by an individual” record.
According to Guinness World Records, adjudicator Charles Wharton attended the event to ensure that all the rules were followed.
Chin and Lim, who are in their 30s and have been married for five years, said it had been their life goal to achieve the record.
“We have practised for so long – six years – to master the act,” Lim told The Star over a phone interview from China yesterday.

“We are so proud that as anak-anak Malaysia, we could achieve it.”

The professional magicians had several opportunities to make the record previously but missed out as they were busy travelling for their work.

They finally got the opportunity to do so when the Guangzhou Hakuna Matata Culture Communication Company invited them to perform at a magic festival in Wuhan.

Setting the record was no easy feat, especially in a windy condition that could impact their act, said Chin.

They, however, managed to pull it off, much to the delight of the crowd.

Chin said they never told their friends and family members of their goal, hoping to surprise them only when they had accomplished it.

“I called my mum straight away and she was thrilled,” he said. “A lot of people were surprised when they saw the news about us,” he added.

The video of their record-breaking performance was posted on the Guinness World Records Facebook page, with more than 100,000 shares and nine million views so far. It can be viewed at youtu.be/zrJYhxtGkRg.
