Radioactive monitoring devices used for the first time

KUALA LUMPUR - The massive counter-terrorism swoop in the city centre marked the first time radioactive monitoring devices were used in such an operation.

The massive counter-terrorism swoop in the city centre marked the first time radioactive monitoring devices were used in such an operation.

Atomic Energy Licensing Board technical officer Mohd Irwan Effendi Mohd Nordin, who was on the ground during yesterday’s joint raids, said his department provided three types of monitoring devices for the operation.

“We brought eight radionuclide identification devices (RID), 95 personal radiation detectors (PRD) and eight radiation backpacks,” he said.

According to Mohd Irwan, the RID is used to scan an area for signs of radiation, while the PRD identifies the type of radioactive material used.

All three devices are used in combination to identify any signs of radioactive material within an area of interest.
