Solution sought for disputed ride-hailing app

THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT has begun public consultations to find a solution to the disputed ride-hailing app regulation, following the revocation of 14 articles of Transportation Ministry Regulation No 26/2017 on the operation of non-route public transportation by the Supreme Court.

Government-organised forums in a number of cities including Jakarta, Surabaya and Makassar invited stakeholders to discuss the issue to ensure the next regulation would be accepted by all stakeholders.
“We hope that with such an activity, we will be able to formulate regulations that accommodate the interests of conventional and online taxis and their users,” said Transportation Ministry’s land transportation director general Hindro Surahmat in Makassar on Thursday as reported by tempo.co.
The Supreme Court revoked 14 articles of the regulation because the court considered them against two laws that have higher hierarchy: Law No. 20/2008 on micro, small and medium enterprises and Law No 22/2009 on traffic and road transportation.
Meanwhile, Darmaningtyas of the Indonesian Transportation Society (MTI) encouraged all stakeholders to take part in formulating the new regulation to ensure it would be applicable.
Organisation of Land Transportation Owners (Organda) secretary general Ateng Aryono said the government should immediately either revise the existing regulation or draft a new regulation to help maintain healthy competition among public transportation operators.
Representative of the Online Drivers Association (ADO) Christiansen Wagey said the government should not only regulate the operators, but also the providers of ride-hailing applications.
