Religious groups unmoved by Jakarta governor’s apology over Koran

The Indonesian religious group Ulema Council will continue legal proceedings against Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama despite him having apologised for his remarks about the Korean.

The general secretary of the Indonesian Ulema Council’s Jakarta chapter Zulfa Mustofa said legal processes would continue although Purnama had offered an apology related to his statement about a verse from the Koran on September 27 in the Thousand Island Regency.
“If people apologise, we will forgive. However, it doesn’t mean that the criminal element in this case is over,” Zulfa said on Monday, adding his group’s South Sumatra chapter had reported Purnama for defamation to the national police.
Besides the South Sumatra chapter, several other groups such as the Muhammadiyah Youths and Forum against Religious Defamation (FUPA) have reported the governor to the police over the allegation of religious defamation.
Zulfa added that his Jakarta chapter had delivered a warning letter to Ahok yesterday morning.
Early on Monday, Ahok offered an apology to Muslims following the uproar about his statements regarding Surah al-Maidah, verse 51 of the Koran.
