CP cooks up eco-friendly chicken feed

Thailand’s largest food producer, Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF), has developed a new “climate-friendly” chicken feed it says will lower carbon dioxide emissions in chicken farming.

Pairat Srichana, senior vice president of CP group, said the new feed recipe was the result of a carefully calibrated balance of amino acids plus enzymes to boost the digestive systems of chickens at different ages. The lower use of corn and protein will also help lower waste emissions from the livestock, he added.
He said that one of the goals of this innovation was to produce zero waste and cut down on production costs. The formula for the feed has been registered by the Department of Livestock Development’s Animal Feed and Veterinary Product Control.
The eco-friendly recipe will feed 6.5 million laying hens, reducing their nitrogen emission by up to 12-13 per cent and CO2 emissions by up to 103 tonnes a year and thereby cutting greenhouse gas output.
CPF is also developing an eco-friendly feed for pigs which should be ready this year, Pairat said.
