Hat Yai airport reopens after fighter jet and fire truck crashes

Hat Yai International airport resumed normal services at midday on Saturday after being closed following the separate crashes of a fighter jet and a fire truck at the facility that morning.

The Gripen jet crashed during an airshow, causing delays to four Hat Yai-bound flights, while two other flights had to land at Phuket and Krabi airports instead. The fire truck tipped over on its side on the runway.

“The airport is now operational as normal from midday after officials cleared the fire truck off the runway,” said Squadron Leader Monthanik Rakngam, the general manager of Hat Yai airport. “The site of the [plane] crash is not in the runway area and it doesn’t have any impact on planes arriving or departing the airport.”
