Washington - Former US vice president Dick Cheney received a heart transplant Saturday at a Virginia hospital, broadcast media reported.

The 71-year-old politician underwent surgery at Inova Fairfax Hospital in northern Virginia, according to Fox News and CBS News, which quoted a spokesman from his office.

Cheney had been on a transplant waiting list for 20 months, according to a statement cited in the reports.

Cheney, a one-time heavy smoker, had suffered five heart attacks since 1978, when he was 37.

The hospital told dpa it had no comment on Cheney's hospitalization.//DPA
