Royal Thai Police spokesman Pol Maj Gen Piya Uthayo told a press conference at 2 pm that police estimated the number of protesters at about 18,000 to 20,000.

Piya said the Royal Plaza ground was still able to accommodate the current number of protesters.

He said if the number of demonstrators grows, police would allow the rally organisers to expand the rally ground.

The spokesman said police did not intend to block protesters from rallying but simply prevented them from entering restricted areas.
