Thai authorities urged to provide legal status to 69 abandoned Myanmar children

A National Human Rights Commission’s subcommittee Sunday called on the Thai government to provide legal status to 69 abandoned Myanmar children under care of a non-governmental organization in Tak.

Surapol Kongchanthik, chairman of the NHRC sub-committee on ethnic minorities and stateless people, made the call when he and his delegation visited the centre providing care for the abandoned Myanmar children in Tak’s Mae Sot district.
The centre is run by the Social Action Women (SAW) group.
Surapol said the SAW could not go public to seek help for the children because they do not have legal status.
Surapol called on government agencies concerned to provide urgent help for the children.
He said he would seek an establishment of a foundation to help the SAW as it also is taking care of several ill Myanmar women.
