Tanongsak lands World Superseries Premier title in Denmark Open
Devastating left-hander Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk made history on Sunday to become the first Thai ever to win the men’s singles title at the BWF World Superseries Premier event when the world No.18 captured the US$700,000 Yonex Denmark Open following a scintillating 21-13 23-21 over Korean world No.7 Son Wan Ho in the showdown in Odense, Denmark.
The convincing win was a sweet revenge for the 26-year-old Tanongsak, who went down to Son at the first round of this year’s Singapore Open. The Korean, who picked up silver medal at this year’s Korea Open and Singapore Open, stunned world No.22 Lee Hyun Il, winner at this year’s US Open and Thailand Masters, at the all-Koreans semi-finals the previous day.
For Tanongsak, this is his first-ever World Superseries Premier even he has won. He has already captured some major tournaments including the 2013 Universiade in Kazan, Russia and the SEA Games in Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar the same year. Earlier this month, he made much of the impact when he delighted home fans with his maiden victory at the Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold.
Thailand has never won the men’s singles event in the BWF World Superseries Premier event before and Tanongsak has already made his mark with his historic win in the top-flight event. Boonsak Ponsana was the first Thai to win men’s singles crown in the BWF Superseries event when he captured the 2007 Singapore Open and repeated the feat in 2012 in the same tournament.
