Thai exports up 8.8% in January

Thailand's exports grew 8.8 per cent to US$17.09 billion (Bt596 billion) in January, while imports rose 5.17 per cent to $16.27 billion, according to the Commerce Ministry.

The ministry announced the year-on-year growth rate amid anticipation that Thailand's full-year export figures will remain positive. Last year, exports which constituted about 70 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) went up 1 per cent after three years of contraction.
Last month, Thailand had a trade surplus of $826 million.
The rising export growth is attributed mainly to higher oil prices encouraging more shipments of petroleum products.
