Rangers and immigration police on Tuesday rounded up 22 Cambodians who tried to sneak across the border into Thailand in Sa Kaew’s Aranyaprathet district.

The joint patrol spotted the Cambodians – 11 men and 11 women – climbing over a concrete wall at a car park next to the Klong Luek canal that borders the two countries.

They were taken to the 1201st Ranger Company for questioning and later handed over the Sa Kaew Immigration Office for deportation.

The Cambodians said they had returned home from Thailand to celebrate Songkran but failed to cross back over the border by the April 30 exemption deadline for returning workers.

They tried to sneak in to avoid paying the fee, they said.
