Marine police in Narathiwat province on Monday confiscated four Vietnamese boats for allegedly operating commercial fishing in Thai waters without a permit and illegally entering Thailand.

Acting on a tip off about the presence of Vietnamese ships in Thai waters, a patrol boat found the four Vietnamese boats about 35 nautical miles from Bang Nara river mouth.

Marine police boarded the vessels and detained 48 crew members, six of whom were under 18 years of age.

Two of the four boats were found to have the same engine numbers, which was an apparent effort to cheat authorities.
