Cambodian workers flee harsh new labour law

About 1,000 Cambodian workers without proper travel documents reported to Thai authorities at the Aranyaprathet border checkpoint in Sa Kaew Friday to be deported back to their motherland.

Sa Kaew immigration police chief Pol Colonel Benjapol Rodsawad said the Cambodians had sneaked into the kingdom without being properly registered. When Thai authorities enforced the harsh new labour law, the Cambodians tried to flee back to their own country.
Benjapol said the workers could come back to get their passports and visas before returning to work in Thailand.
As part of the exodus, some 100 Cambodian workers without travel documents were captured aboard a train to Sa Kaew on Friday. Railway police handed them over to the Sa Kaew immigration office for deportation.
