Nakhon Phanom governor Somchai Witdamrong has instructed officials to speed up surveys of 11 flooded districts in the province so they can be declared disaster zones.

The disaster zone declaration will allow the provincial administration to bypass the central government in obtaining funds from the emergency budget to help affected people.

On Monday Somchai said 11 out of the 12 districts in Nakhon Phanom have been hit by floods.

He said it is estimated that the province was hit with 400 million cubic metres of floodwater and 200 million cubic metres had to be drained as the province’s Nong Han Lake could handle only handle 200 million cubic metres.
