Two teenagers have been fined Bt1,000 each for riding a motorcycle on an expressway, police said.

The two were caught on video riding their bike on the Bang Klo-Chaeng Wattana elevated expressway without wearing helmets. They were seen smiling at the camera.

The clip was posted on Facebook on Tuesday afternoon. Within about 22 hours, it had received more than 331,000 views.

Metropolitan Police deputy commissioner Pol Maj-General Jiraphat Phumichit said on Wednesday that police had managed to trace the two young men, who were taken to the expressway police station to face fines for not wearing helmets and violating the ban on motorcycles on expressways.

Jiraphat quoted the two as saying they had accidentally entered the expressway while they were riding on a frontage road on Soi Sukhumvit 62.

Jiraphat said police had been assigned to work with expressway officials to locate areas that motorcyclists might use to sneak onto the expressway.
