Floods hit Sukhothai’s Muang downtown area

Heavy downpour early Thursday caused flooding in downtown Sukhothai on Thursday.

Torrential rains unleashed by the influence of the monsoon and a low pressure cell that downgraded from tropical Storm Pakhar hit the province from 2.30am to 5.30am, causing floods about 15 to 20 centimetres high in the business area of the province’s Muang district.
Singhawat Road in front of the Muang district office was under 15 to 20 centimetres of water for about 200 metres. Wichien Chamnong Road, Rat-uthit Road and other connected roads near the Acharn Manas market were also flooded.
Muang Sukhothai Municipality mayor Pichet Thaikla dispatched officials to drain floodwater to Yom River amid expectation of more rains during the day.
Sukhothai Governor Piti Kaewsalabsi warned residents of the province to brace for more rains until September 2.
