Ayutthaya temple fire damages ancient Buddha statue

A morning fire damaged a Buddha statue of the Ayutthaya period in a temple in Ayutthaya’s Mueang district on Friday.

The fire started inside the main chapel from behind the Phra Buddha Kodom statue, which is the temple’s main statue. The temple said the statue survived from the Ayutthaya period from 1350 to 1767 AD.
Phra Prisak, 63, said he was walking to the dining tower of the temple when he was alerted by people living nearby that smoke was coming out of the main chapel. He saw power cables behind the statue had caught fire and spread to burn the back and front of the statue.
Monks and nearby people took about 20 minutes to put out the blaze.
