Mourning period brings mass ordinations

Men across the country were ordained as novices and monks on Monday to honour His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

In southern Yala province, 146 men became novices in a mass ordination at Wat Nirote Sangkharam in Muang district as a tribute to the beloved late King.
Yala Governor Anuchit Trakulmuthuta presided at the ceremony, after which the novices were expected to be ordained as monks at their local temples around the province and practise dharma-vinaya until October 28, when they would shed their robes and resume their lives as laymen.
In Buri Ram in the Northeast, 134 men were ordained as monks at Wat Klang Phra Aram Luang.
They will pursue dharma studies at Thung Pho, Ban Ploem and Thai Charoen temples until October 30.
About 20 businesspeople distributed food to people attending the ceremony to make merit for the late monarch.
Chiang Rai Governor Narongsak Osotthanakorn presided at the mass ordination of 89 men who will similarly remain in the monkhood until October 30.
Ordinations also took place on Monday for 89 men each at Wat Tha Luang in Phichit and Wat Khien Khet in Pathum Thani.
The Cabinet on September 5 approved a National Office of Buddhism proposal for permanent and contracted government officials and employees of state enterprises to take paid leave from October 16-30 and be ordained as a tribute to King Bhumibol.
