Perjury charges filed against seven in Jomsap case

Perjury charges filed against seven in Jomsap case

Official perjury complaints have been filed against seven suspects in the alleged plot to clear the name of Jomsap Saenmuangkhot, the former teacher convicted and jailed for a high-profile fatal road accident.

Pol Colonel Narong Wongtham and Pol Lt-Colonel Atisak Chomsriharaj lodged a set of perjury complaints against Sap Wapi, Chan Wapi, Boontoeng Wapi and Lert Wapi with the Na Don Police Station on Monday.
Sap is one of two men who came forward to police claiming responsibility for the accident in question.
Atisak also lodged further complaints against Sap, Jomsap’s friend Suriya Nuancharoen, her husband Niran Saengmuangkhot and Tassanee Harnpayak at the Muang Nakhon Phanom Police Station.
Tassanee is a witness in the case who has testified that the accident was caused by a man.
The complaints are related to the seven suspects’ efforts to demonstrate to authorities that Jomsap was not responsible for the fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in 2005.
The campaign to clear her name continued even after she was found guilty of causing the accident by both the Court of First Instance and the Supreme Court. She has already served a jail term and was released on a royal pardon.
Jomsap has always maintained that she is innocent, but she has been unable to secure a new trial.
Her request for a retrial was rejected last Friday as the Supreme Court cited evidence indicating Sap had been hired to claim responsibility for the accident.
That allegation has in turn led to the perjury charges.
