Police have arrested a former inmate who allegedly drowned a 59-year-old woman while attempting to rape her in Uttaradit’s Muang district.

Police took Boonrod Choompakping, 51, who was arrested on Monday, to re-enact the crime at an irrigation canal in Moo 5 village, Tambon Ban Koh, Muang district on Tuesday.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for Boonrod after the body of Rattikal Tonil, who was naked from the waist down, was found under a pile of weeds and branches on the canal’s bank on October 31.
During the re-enactment, Boonrod showed no emotion.
He said he had spotted the woman fishing on the canal bank alone and he became angry after she would not allow him to cast a fishing net in the area.
He said he returned 10 minutes later and pushed Rattikal into the canal and forced her head under water, intending to cause her to pass out so that he could rape her.
But when he realised he had killed her, he hid her body and pushed her motorcycle into the water, he told police.
Uttaradit acting police chief Pol Colonel Thinnawat Phetphansri said Boonrod had been released from jail in Phitsanulok after being convicted of rape.
Thinnawat said Boonrod had also admitted that he had raped six other women between 50 to 60 years old but the statute of limitations in those cases had expired, Thinnawat added.
