SRT to expand passenger capacity during New Year holidays, expects 120,000 to travel

The State Railway of Thailand will increase the frequency of train services during the long New Year holiday period so that it can transport around 120,000 travellers a day, its acting governor said Monday.

Anon Luangboribun, who is also inspector-general of the Transport Ministry, said the SRT expected up to 120,000 passengers per day across its network from December 29 to January 3.
Currently, there are 234 trains running each day and the SRT will increase the number of carriages for each train to full capacity during the long New Year break, which would enable it to transport about 100,000 passengers a day.
Moreover, the SRT will add a further 14 trains on busy routes during the period, taking the overall daily capacity to 120,000 passengers.
Eight of the extra trains will run on lines from Bangkok to other provinces on December 29 and 30, and six additional trains will run in the opposite direction on January 2 and 3, Anon added.
Tourist train services from Bangkok to Hua Hin, Pasak Dam and Kanchanaburi will be cancelled during the long weekend of the New Year holidays so that the SRT can better handle the increased number of passengers visiting their hometowns and later returning to Bangkok, the acting governor explained.
