Tourists enjoy Mae Hong Son fog, while locals call for disaster declaration

The downtown of Mae Hong Son was covered with fog on Friday morning to the delight of tourists as the temperature in the town dropped to eight degrees Celsius.

Sunthorn Kanthamala, a weather forecast official of the Mae Hong Son Meteorological Office, said local people should prepare their winter clothing as the temperature could further drop.
Tourists enjoyed the view of fog covering Mae Hong Son’s downtown from the Wat Phra That Doi Kong Moo on the mountaintop in the heart of the province.
Local residents have complained that they have not received help from the authorities although the northern province has been hit by a cold spell for many days.
The officials explained that the provincial administration could not declare a cold spell disaster zone in the mountainous province because the Meteorological Department had not installed its thermometers in many parts of the province.
The regulation allowed the declaration of cold spell disaster zone if the Meteorological Department reported that the temperature in an area is below 8C for three consecutive days.
