A 90-year-old woman was killed when the emergency vehicle that was taking her to hospital crashed into a roadside tree on Surat Thani road on Monday night.

Police said the accident happened at 9.30pm on the Ban Krood-Mae Mok road in Moo 7 village in Tambon Krood in Surat Thani's Kanchanadit district.

Daeng Thowirat died of a broken neck, police said.

Her two relatives and the driver of the rescue pickup truck of Kusol Sattha Surat Thani Foundation were injured and taken to Kanchanadit Hospital.

Daeng's relatives said they called the foundation after Daeng suffered chest pains. The foundation sent an emergency pickup truck to take her to hospital, which is about 25 kilometres from her house.

Police said when the pickup reached a curve in the road, the driver lost control and crashed into a roadside tree.
