Police said Malikee Lateh, a defence volunteer of Moo 5 village in Tambon Katong, died at the Yaha district hospital at 9.45am from multiple gunshot wounds to his face and chest.
Other defence volunteers told police that Malikee was guarding the road behind the house of the village headman Halong Ahlae, when he was cut down in a hail of gunfire by a group of insurgents who immediately fled the scene.
