Apichart Nualting, 37, surrendered to police shortly after his friend, Songdej Hadnil, 53, died on his way to the Pak Chom Hospital.
Songdej suffered multiple wounds on his body, head and legs inflicted by shotgun pellets.
Apichart told police that he and Songdej entered the Khao Kaew Don Pak Choim forest reserve in Ban Phon Thong village in Tambon Chiang Klom at 3am.
Apichart said he and Songdej separated to hunt palm civets and, after seeing a pair of eyes reflecting his flashlight, he fired once at what he thought was an animal. He then realised that he had shot Songdej.
