Policeman shot and hurt by fleeing drug suspects

A policeman was shot and hurt while trying to arrest two men suspected of drugs offences on Bang Na-Trat road in Bangkok's Bang Na district late on Sunday night.

The officer, from the Provincial Police Bureau 1’s investigation division, suffered a slight graze to his head when one of the suspects fired at him at about 11pm in front of the Bang Na National Housing Authority Community 2 near Soi Bang Na-Trat 46.
The two suspects abandoned their van, whose tyre was flattened by police gunfire, and fled on a motorcycle they robbed from a motorcyclist at the scene.
Acting on tips-off, a team of policemen had been staking out the tenth residential building of community until the two suspects arrived in a Hyundai van.
The two men noticed something wrong, however, so they sped off instead of parking their vehicle to pick up the drugs. Police tried to prevent them escaping by firing at the van tyres.
Officers on motorcycles then chased after the van and an officer was shot.
During the attempt to flee, the van hit and damaged ten motorcycles before finally stopping in front of the second residential building, where the two men robbed a motorcycle belonging to a man named as Pornchai Tainaokong and sped off.
Police then checked a room on the second floor of the tenth building and found seven teenagers abusing drugs. They were taken to Bang Na police station.
Police also found a Volkswagen van in the buildings’ car park. It was locked and its windows were tinted, making it hard to see what was inside, so police had it towed to Bang Na police station to be examined.
