Phuket governor urges care over Songkran

Phuket Governor Norapat Plodthong has urged people to be especially careful on the road during the Songkran holidays today through Tuesday (April 11-17).

In emergencies, people can call 1669.
He said today he was ordering that lights be installed at road curves and other known risky spots.
Norapat also wants officials manning checkpoints to enforce the law strictly and consistently.

Anyone caught setting up fake checkpoints to extort money from motorists would be severely prosecuted, he said.
Fifteen centres are being set up in all three districts of Phuket to reduce accidents along with 15 “sub-checkpoints” and 20 “service points”.
There will also be an administrative centre with a new patrol boat at Chalong Pier to monitor marine safety around the clock.
The Royal Thai Navy Area 3 will have a helicopter standing by.
