Holders of the ‘poor man's debit card’ can ride subway from next month

Holders of state welfare smartcards will be allowed to use them to pay for subway fares starting late next month.

Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand governor Pakapong Sirikantaramas said on Thursday that holders of the welfare cards, dubbed “the poor man’s debit card”, can register with the MRT to use the subway service from July 6 to September 30.
The cards can be used to pay for subway fares starting on July 20, he added.
The fare will automatically be deducted from the Bt500 monthly allowance given to each card holder, he said.
Only residents of Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Ayutthaya, Samut Prakan, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon will be allowed to register for service.
