Three-hour bike rally spreads out across four villages against power plant

Three-hour bike rally spreads out across four villages against power plant

Some 1,300 residents of Tambon Han Sai in Sa Kaew’s Aranyaprathet district attended a 28-kilometre bicycle rally on Sunday in a campaign against a plan to build a biomass-fired power plant in the area.

The participants, wearing white shirts with the message “Tambon Han Sai conservationists to stop the construction of power plant” and carrying signs, turned up at 6am and formed a two-kilometre-long bike caravan along the streets of four villages. The protest didn’t end until three hours later.

Ban Nong Bua Tai resident Sombat Anongporn, 44, said he had joined the rally because he wanted to protect the health of Tambon Han Sai residents and their children from the upcoming threat of the power plant.
Ban Han Sai (Moo 5) resident Dokmai Hanthayung, 46, said the 1,300-strong bike rally aimed to raise people’s awareness of the pollution that the power plant could create in the community.
The group had on June 6 submitted a formal petition to district chief Sawanit Suriyakul, signed by 2,600 villagers, as per his suggestion to them during their May 21 protest outside the district office.

Sawanit had promised to forward the petition to the concerned authorities, so the villagers had ended their protest at that time.
They insist, however, they don’t want the power plant in their neighbourhood because of fears over the possible impact on their health and the environment.
