Homeless man killed in hit and run in Phayao

An unidentified homeless man was struck and killed by a vehicle in Phayao early on Wednesday, police said. The driver is being sought after fleeing the scene.

The Muang Phayao police station was alerted at 3.10am of an accident on the Phaholyothin road in Ban Pong Kham village, Tambon Ban Tam.
The man, who appeared to be between 60 and 70 years old, was crushed under the wheels of what police suspect was a large vehicle. The bumper of a truck was found at the scene. The victim was carrying two Bt20 banknotes in his trouser pocket but no identification.
Local residents told police that the man had been seen crossing the road back and forth at the spot over the last two days. Police were alerted on Tuesday night over concerns that he might be hit by a vehicle, but when they arrived at the scene he had disappeared.
Local residents heard sounds of an accident at 3am and emerged to find the victim already dead in the road.
