A bed-ridden woman, 71, was killed when a fire engulfed her house in Ayutthaya on Friday morning.

Neighbours heard her wailing and shouting for help but the blaze was too intense for them to push through to rescue her.

Ten fire engines rushed to the house in Moo 6 village in Tambon Bor Phong, Nakhon Luang district at 6.30am after neighbours alerted police.

Firefighters took about half an hour to put out the blaze and found the charred body of Chalad Srithong in the house.

Her son, Farung Thongsakul, 38, told police that he left home for work about 30 minutes before he heard about the fire and rushed home to find that his mother had been killed.

Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
