A passenger and driver had a lucky escape when their taxi burst into flames on a Bangkok road in the early hours of Wednesday.

Police were alerted of the fire in Pathumwan district at 2am.

Firefighters took 15 minutes to put out the blaze after it engulfed the entire taxi at Soi Ratchadamri 1 off Ratchadamri Road.

The driver, Sunthorn Kanyaboon, 50, said he saw flames leaping up from under the hood as he was driving over the Pratunam Bridge, so he sped off the bridge and parked to seek help.

Sunthorn complained his passenger had fled the scene without even bothering to pay the fare.

The taxi runs on LPG gas. Police have yet to determine the cause of the fire.
