China-Philippines Ties: Opening a new chapter and charting a blueprint

China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable will hold China-Philippines Business Forum 2018 themed “Taking the China-Philippines Relations to New Heights”, from 09:30-12:45 on 26 Nov 2018 in Manila, Republic of the Philippines.

The China-Philippines Business Forum 2018 aims to strengthen communications and trust, deepen understanding of cooperation opportunities between China and the Philippines in a broad range of areas, including human resources development, promotion of personnel exchanges, trade facilitation, digital economy development and many other cooperation opportunities. The forum will include two panel discussions on “Navigating Opportunities along Maritime Silk Road” and “How Business Can Transform in the Digital Era”. Speakers will share their views on the topics concerned and interact with some 300 delegates at the forum.

Chinese President Xi Jinping made a state visit to the Philippines on November 20 and 21 -- the first visit to the Philippines by a Chinese head of state in 13 years. China and the Philippines agreed on Nov 20 to upgrade their ties to comprehensive strategic cooperation and jointly advance the Belt and Road construction. President Xi described the Philippines as an important partner in jointly building the Belt and Road and urged both sides to deepen the synergy between the Belt and Road Initiative and the Philippines’ own development plans, and boost cooperation in such fields as infrastructural construction, telecommunications and agriculture. China will continue to support the Philippines as the two countries continue to move forward as win-win partners.

Negotiations between China and the Philippines on diplomatic and trade issues have been proceeding rapidly since the second half of 2016. The new maritime cooperation mechanism has been launched as well. Both countries attach great importance to their mutual relationship. Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who visited the Philippines in October this year, said China will firmly support the Philippines in speeding up economic and social development. The Philippines is an important link in the Maritime Silk Road project and, therefore, is a natural partner in jointly developing the Belt and Road Initiative. Philippine Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez also noted that the Philippines is willing to be deeply engaged in the construction of the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.

China Daily is delighted to have H.E. Mr. TAN Qingsheng, Deputy Chief of Mission and Minister Counsellor, Chinese Embassy in the Republic of the Philippines; and The Hon. Mr. Mark Dennis Y.C. JOVEN, Undersecretary, Department of Finance, Republic of the Philippines, deliver the keynote address after the welcoming remarks.

The first panel discussion, themed “Navigating Opportunities along Maritime Silk Road”, will have seven distinguished speakers -- Mr. Tereso PANGA, Deputy Director General for Policy and Planning, Philippine Economic Zone Authority; Mr. DENG Jun, Country Head, Bank of China Limited-Manila Branch; Dr. John GONG, Professor of Economics, The University of International Business and Economics; Mr. Patrick IP, Managing Director, China-ASEAN Investment Cooperation Fund; Mr. Nicholas KWAN, Director of Research, Hong Kong Trade Development Council; Dr. SHEN Minghui, Director, Department of Emerging Economy, National Institute of International Strategy; and Prof. Federico M. MACARANAS, Adjunct Professor, AIM; Former Executive Director, WB-AIM Global Distance Learning Network

Currently, both the digital economy and internet economy are increasing changing the way businesses operate. The 26th APEC Economic Leader’s Meeting also included the theme “Embracing the Digital Future”, with the leaders focused on strengthening the digital economy, including how APEC can have a more open, accessible and secure online environment. Embracing a digital future is inseparable from the transformation and innovation under the current trend. In the second panel discussion, themed “How Business Can Transform in the Digital Era”, the panelists will be Mr. Jubert Daniel ALBERTO, Country Head of Operations, IDC Philippines; and Mr. Anthony THOMAS, President and CEO, Mynt.
