A civilian defence official in Narathiwat’s Ra-ngae district was shot and severely injured by suspected insurgents on Tuesday evening.

Ammart Marong, 40, an official of the territory defence company of Ra-ngae, was shot at about 6.45pm while riding his motorcycle on a road in Ban Sipo village in Tambon Chalerm, police said.

Ammart was shot seven times, sustaining injuries to his arms, legs and torso. He was rushed to the Ra-ngae Hospital and is in critical condition.

Police said Ammart was riding his motorcycle back home after playing football when an unknown number of insurgents ambushed him from a roadside.
