Tuktuk drivers offered loans of Bt100,000

Tuktuk drivers can apply for a loan of up to Bt100,000 to repair their tricycles, the Thai Credit Guarantee Corporation (TCG) says.

TCG general manager Rak Worakijphokhathorn said tuktuk drivers can join a loan programme at five commercial banks.
Rak said over 5,000 taxi motorcyclists applied for the loans on Thursday, the first registration day, although the TCG expected the number at 500.
As a result, the TCG would expand the ceiling of its credit guarantee for taxi motorcyclists from Bt1 billion to Bt20 billion.
The TCG initiated the project for taxi motorcyclists because they normally cannot apply for loans from banks, prompting them to be in debt to loan sharks.
For tuktuk drivers, Bt50,000 of the Bt100,000 could be spent repairing and improving their vehicles and the rest for settling their non-bank loans or for other emergency expenses, Rak added.
