Authorities on Sunday morning cordoned off a five-storey building in Bangkok’s China Town after a fire raged through it and injured a man.

Mongkhon Wutthanakul, 33, said he was busy with some goods on the third floor when he smelled some smoke.

“So, I went down to check and saw a fiery fire,” he said.

Mongkhon said he decided to run for his life through the flaming second floor out of fear that he might get trapped inside if he did not escape right away.

The fire caused injuries on his back. He was rushed to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s General Hospital.

The injured victim is the younger brother of the building owner, Chanthana Wutthanakul.

It took the firemen more than one hour to put out the blaze.

Samphanthawong District Office director Kajeerat Jenakhom said the fire-fighting operations were quite difficult because the building was located in a very narrow lane.

“The firefighters had to use a huge volume of water. Now we have cordoned off the area, as there are fears that the building may collapse,” she said.

Police plan to interview Mongkhon as part of the investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

According to police, the first and second floors were for residential units while the building’s occupants had stocked goods on the third to fifth floors.
