The rainy season in Thailand will officially start on Monday, Meteorological Department deputy director general Kornravee Sitthichivaphak said on Saturday.

She said Thailand would see continued rains in most parts of the country from Monday and the wind over Thailand at 100 metres to 3,500 metres would be replaced by a southwest monsoon that would carry humidity from the Andaman Sea to cover most parts of Thailand.

Kornravee added that the high-altitude wind at 5,000 metres would also be replaced by eastward winds.

All of these are indicators of the rainy season, she said.

The department predicted low amounts of rains from June to the middle of July, she said, so people are advised to conserve water.

She said heavy rains are predicted in August and September and there could be flash flooding and riverbank bursts during the period.
