Karen soldier charged with allegedly poaching in Kanchanaburi

A Karen National Union soldier has been arrested and charged with allegedly poaching in a national park in Kanchanaburi.

Panatchakorn Phobanthit, chief of the Sai Yok National Park, said on Thursday the 26-year-old KNU soldier - identified only as Satu - was found at a makeshift hunting camp inside the park on Wednesday afternoon and was arrested.
Panatchakorn said park officials and troops from the Army’s Lardya Taskforce in Fort Surasee found the camp during their patrol of the park at 1.15pm.
The camp was about 3 kilometres from the Thai-Myanmar border.
Panatchakorn said the officials seized carcasses of a bearcat and a pig-tailed macaque, a pistol and a shotgun and some ammunition at the camp.
He said Satu fled into the forest when officials arrived.
He was arrested later and said that he was a KNU soldier. He said there had been two other KNU troops at the camp and they were hunting wild animals.
Satu was charged with poaching and unlawful entry into the kingdom.
