Trademark protection

"Thai Silk", the trademark of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, has been registered in eight countries, Hong Kong and the EU to ensure international protection, according to the Intellectual Property Department.

The trademark has been registered in mainland China, Norway, Spain, the United Kingdom, Malaysia, the Philippines, the United States, Singapore, Hong Kong and the European Union. Efforts are also being made to register the trademark in India.

The department's director-general, Pajchima Tanasanti, said the move would prevent other countries using the "Thai Silk" trademark for commercial purposes. It will also reduce confusion among consumers about the different kinds of silk from China, Vietnam and India.

There are four different types of Thai silk trademarks - "golden peacock", "silver peacock", "blue peacock", and "green peacock" - depending on the purpose for which it is used. The Thai silk, however, must be produced only in Thailand and be environment-friendly.
